Abstract:

The article presents results from an ethnographic study of the gay community in Recife (PE), carried out via participant observations and interviews. It aims to understand the sexual conduct among men who have sex with men (MSM) and HIV risk, focusing on the meanings of sexual positions during anal intercourse – receptive (RAI) and REPLACEive (IAI). The literature shows that those who practice unprotected RAI are subject to a greater risk of infection than those who practice IAI. Those who practice both, RAI and IAI, are amplifying links (greater chances of receiving and passing on the virus) in the transmission chains. The text addresses the emic categories related with gender identities – pintosa (feminine gay), boy (sic.) (masculine gay), and cafuçu (MSM and with women, not gay, masculine, lower social class) – and with sexual identities – ativo (IAI), passivo (RAI), and versáteis (IAI and RAI) - in the ways they result in sexual positions and produce sexual attraction. Masculine men are the most sexually desirable. Boys tend to relate with boys, and pintosas with cafuçus. There is an expressive number of versáteis, which increases the collective risk within the gay community. In addition, via the relations between pintosas and cafuçus, a facilitating path may exist for the virus to more widely circulate among the gay community and wider society.
