Abstract:

The prevalence of concurrency specific diseases in the elderly is poorly described in the literature. This study aimed to estimate the the simultaneous prevalence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in elderly Brazilians, and contextual and individual factors associated with it. Cross-sectional study of population-based elderly (≥60 years) interviewed by Vigitel in 2012 (n = 10,991). Analysis were performed using multilevel Poisson regression in Stata 12. The average age of the elderly was 69.4 years and the simultaneous prevalence of disease was 16.2% with variation in the Brazilian capital. In São Paulo and Curitiba prevalences were higher than in Boa Vista and Manaus. Highest prevalence rates were observed in the capitals of the South/Southeast/Midwest, the elderly black and brown, those with education ≤ 8 years of study, in non-smokers and ex-smokers, and overweight. It was found the effect of the geographical region in the simultaneous prevalence of diseases by rising 23.5% in the magnitude of prevalence ratio after adjusting for all individual variables. Through the study, it was possible to measure the effect of the context in which the elderly live (home region) on the prevalence of
