Abstract:

The aim of this article is to discuss the concept of health, understanding it as multiple, plural. We adopt Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical thought as an analytical tool, allowing us to reach a typology involving large and small health. While the first is normative and sustained by an ideal of healing, the second becomes understood as expansive strength, as a condition that is continually conquered. If the small health follows a previous script of life moralization, a great health is related to the expansion of what one lives, which affirms his/her creative character and which is not established by the herd. The notion of a large health is against the imperatives of overcoming models that attach practices founded in biomedicine, and approaches to collective actions in the health area. Nevertheless, on the one hand, this movement extends the co-participatory nature between staff and users of the health system, on the other hand, it lacks more radical disruptions to the moral factors of the health-disease processes. Not refusing ups and downs of life, a large health understands how necessary it is the incorporation of the pain and suffering involved in individuation movements.
