Abstract:

The main objective of this study was to analyze social and health impacts resulting from the construction of Tucuruí (Pará, Brasil) and James Bay (Quebec, Canadá) Hydropower Plants. This study utilize a comparative method for literature review pointing out lessons to be learned, from national and international experiences, toward a sustainable management of future large energy projects in Brazil. In this study, it was observed a negative domino effect on social impacts of job, income, sanitation, and culture, all with associated health problems. The late mitigation actions targeted to minimize the effects of these negative impacts. Even though, there were three decades of time elapsed, these actions were still ineffective to solve all health and socio-environmental problems.
