Abstract:

The objective was to identify social determinants of health associated with the experience of hunger among Brazilian schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study was carried out with microdata16,526 adolescentsthe 2015 National Adolescent Health Survey. The experience of hunger was estimated considering the frequency with which the adolescent had been hungry for not having enough food at home in the month prior to the survey. For the analysis of social determinants in health, Poisson regression with robust variance was performed. It was found, in Brazil, that the experience of hunger was 22.8% (95%CI: 21.9-23.7) among adolescents. This was directly associated with males (PR=1.12; 95%CI: 1.07-1.16), not being overweight (PR=1.08; 95%CI: 1.04-1.13 ), to irregular consumption of beans (RP=1.20; 95%CI: 1.13-1.26), vegetables (RP=1.16; 95%CI: 1.09-1.22) and fruits (PR=1.19; 95%CI: 1.13-1.24), body dissatisfaction (PR=1.26; 95%CI: 1.18-1.35) and irregular consumption of lunch or dinner with those responsible (RP=1.41; 95%CI: 1.32-1.52); and inversely to the gradient of maternal education, and to the macro-regions of the Center-South complex. The results indicate the coexistence of hunger, nutritional risk eating behaviors, body dissatisfaction and conditions of social inequality among Brazilian adolescents.
