Abstract:

The objective of this study was to analyze the process of social interaction of Brazilian women who profess the Protestant religion with exposure to HIV/AIDS, according to the meanings attributed by them. This was a qualitative, interpretative study with 24 videoconference interviews, analyzed based on Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory. Women mean exposure to HIV/AIDS as a lack of traditional preventive methods, Christian teachings, and condemnation of the other. They recall memories of taboos, senses of serious illness, and protective religious norms. They assess their exposure as low and try to act on Christian teachings with marriage, condoms for birth control, and mentoring others. They interpret negatively the little approach of some churches, the prejudices against people with HIV and the impulsiveness of people outside the Christian environment. They seek to live the best of both worlds, Christian and non-Christian, seeking knowledge. Central category: Recommending care for the body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, with the use of condoms in situations not maintaining Christian life. In conclusion, the representative model shows that women distance themselves from exposure to HIV/AIDS as a “disease of others”, suggesting the potential of religious institutions as health promoters.
