Abstract:

Gestating and giving birth in prison can deepen power relationships and mechanisms that promote inequality in the care provided to women and children with negative consequences on both their lives. The theme gave rise to research that aimed to understand the experiences of pregnancy and childbirth in women in prison. Method: qualitative study, under theoretical perspectives that address intersectionality between race, gender and social class. The study was carried out through interviews with women who had left a penitentiary in southern Brazil. The participants, mostly young black women, report having been subjected to situations of violence since the police approach, before imprisonment. Once deprived of their liberty, they were subjected to humiliation, deficient access to health, psychological and moral violence by security agents and health professionals. The experience of childbirth was permeated by institutional violence and a feeling of loneliness and helplessness. Failure to comply with legal provisions, reproduction of violence in relations with security agents and systematic neglect of social and health needs are additional effects of oppression of gender, race and social class that affect pregnant women and women in prison.
