Abstract:

The objective of this study was to review the literature about the relationship between eating disorders and social skills in adolescents. Searches were conducted in the Medline, SciELO and LILACS databases, crossing the key words "eating disorder," "anorexia nervosa", "bulimia nervosa" and "eating behavior", with the key words "social psychology", "social isolation”, "social competence", "social skill” and “interpersonal relationship". Only research with adolescents was included, written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in publications produced between the years 2007 and 2012. The search resulted in 63 articles, 50 were included in this review. Most studies were conducted in Brazil (n = 13) and United States (n = 13), of the 50, 43 (86%) were original articles. The studies aimed at understanding how the emotional state could influence the establishment of eating disorders, as well as the interpersonal relationships and the relationship between the peers. The articles also discussed the influence of the media and society in this process. From the analysis of the work, it was observed that the higher the social skills of adolescents, the greater the protective factor against the development of eating disorders. Social skills should be encouraged from early childhood, giving emotional and social support in adolescence.
