Abstract:

The main objective of this paper is to make a conceptual discussion about the relationship between technological and scientific progress and the ideas of social equality or reduction of social inequalities. In order to do a methodological approach for this discussion, I propose three different foci: 1) to focus on the ethical and economic approach of self interest and utilitarism on the basis of economic thought of the classic authors; 2) to point out, on the basis of economic development theories of the mainstream, the thesis of the continous increase of work productivity by means of technological progress linked with strictly utilitarian human behavior; 3)- to emphasize different theories on economic development, social policy and ecological economy (in the second half of the Twentieth Century), in order to build different ways for development on the basis of social egalitarianism and economic ecological principles.
