Abstract:

Spatial distribution analysis of motorcycle related death rates in Brazilian municipalities is fundamental to understand and minimize it occurrence. Our main objective is to analyze the spatial distribution of motorcycle death rates in Brazil, relying on more trustful estimates. We intended as well to identify the presence of spatial clusters of municipalities’ rates. The rates were estimated based on the average number of motorcyclist deaths observed in the years of 2014, 2015 and 2016. In sequence, rates were directly standardized and smoothed based on empirical Bayesian estimators. A Local Indicator of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA) indicated the presence of spatial patterns. The Northeast and West-Central regions concentrated most of the municipalities with high mortality rate as well and most of the clusters of municipalities with high-high pattern. Smoothed rates managed well the occurrence of extreme values, improved the reliability of the estimates, and enhanced the visualization of the rates in the maps.
