Abstract:

The aim of this study was to analyze the reasons for missed appointments in dental Family Health Units (FHU) and implement strategies to reduce them through action research. This is an action-research study, conducted in 12 USF in Piracicaba/SP, from January, 1 to December, 31 of 2010. The sample was composed by 385 users of these health units who were interviewed over the phone and asked about the reasons for missing dental appointments, beyond 12 dentists and 12 nurses. Held two workshops with professionals: an initial for questioning the data collected in interviews and strategizing, and another after 4 months for evaluation. The greatest source of faults (28.05%) was the coincidence of the opening hours of the units with the work schedule of the users. Among the strategies emphasize the lectures on oral health, lifelong learning in team meetings, training of Community Health Agents (CHA), participation in therapeutic groups and partnerships between Oral Health Team (ESB) and social infrastructure of the community. The adoption of the strategy chart single was found by challenging professionals. The strategies implemented have led to the reduction of faults in 66.6% of the units and the character of motivating workshops enabled critical reflection of reality to redirect health practice.
