Abstract:

This study evaluates the association between social environmental factors and urban sanitation conditions with the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis, in a community at the periphery of Manaus city. The study was based on a social environmental survey and a parasitologic inquiry. A heterogenious community was verified, with some social-economics and environmental differences among the micro-areas, even though the urban sanitation conditions have presented themselves generaly precarious. The prevalance of intestinal parasitosis was 44,2%. There was no significative difference between the micro-areas that could explain the occurance of intestinal parasitosis. An association between instestinal parasitosis and building types, people age and the quality of the water used for personal hygene and consume at home was carried out. The open air sewerage was a risk factor associated to intestinal parasitosis (OR=6,72; p=0,034) and also to intestinal protozoa (OR=21,87; p=0,004). For protozoa presence, two risk factors were verified: the sewage dumping directly into the “igarapés” (OR=12,98; p=0,011) and the use of rudimentary ditches (OR=9,54; p=0,019).
