Abstract:

A literature review was carried out focusing on the main factors associated with suicidal attempts in elders. The investigation was done between 2002 and 2013. The databases searched were MEDLINE, Lilacs, Pubmed, PsychINFO, SciELO, the Virtual Library in Violence and Health from BIREME and the Virtual Library of Public Health. A hundred and five references were selected and seventy five were analyzed. The studies are growing in North America, Europe and Asia, are rare in Latina America and do not exist in Africa. Almost all studies are from epidemiological or quantitative basis according to different approaches. The major causing factors are degenerative and chronic diseases, lost, abandon, lowliness, family conflicts and it should be helped according its severity. Difference from gender, ethnicity, old age, social issues and cultural backgrounds are important factors to be analyzed. The subject of suicidal attempts in elderly is very important to the Unique Healthy System (SUS) since this problem is not treated in Brazil, nor in theory neither in the practice field. We hope that this revision can be a base for empirical studies which contribute for the elderly health support and to promote a healthy old age.
