Abstract:

This paper discusses the suicide of elderly men in Brazil. The text is based on studies of gender and masculinities and emphasizes the sense of “hegemonic masculinity” within the logic of patriarchal system that, in case of suicides, is expressed in the loss of the job that as existential reference and in the sense of loss of honor. The study includes 40 cases of men beyond of 60 years who died by suicide in the period of 2007-2010 in ten districts of the country. Using the psychosocial autopsy technique were collected and analyzed data from their history and way of life; evaluation of the background of the act; impact on their families; lethality of the method; proximity to sources of support; previous attempts; mental status which preceded the act; reactions of families and communities. Even though many factors are associated with self-inflicted death in this social group, it is undeniable the influence of hegemonic masculinity culture in the preeminence of suicides among old men compared with old women. It is essential to give special attention to men in moments of transition from working life to retirement, loss or referential persons in their family, and when they are diagnosed with chronic and degenerative diseases that cause disabilities, loss of autonomy or sexual impotence.
