Abstract:

This study aimed to know the interactions established between social support networks and families that have children and teenagers who are visual impaired in two different cities in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. This is a qualitative and descriptive research with the Symbolic Interactionism as theoretical reference. It was used the genogram, ecomap and semi-structured interviews with 18 families. The method adopted to data analysis was narrative analysis, and we observed and analyzed two themes: derived potentials from the relationship with the support network and counterpoints in the support network. The family access as support network the members of their own family, friends, spirituality, cultural activities, health services and government institutions and philanthropy. The weakness in the health services support is an obstacle to comprehensive healthcare to children and adolescents living in the city A. In the B, there is provision of other possibilities for presenting a reference service. Despite the weaknesses in the supports network in both cities, the family articulates and develops a foundation so the best as possible can be made for their child or teen. It is up to health professionals to provide support to families and empower them to care for their members.
