Abstract:

The concept of vulnerability is enclosed in a situation that involves at least three dimensions: risk exposure trajectories, capabilityresponse and adaptation possibilities based on both the intensity of risk and resilience in the face of the materialization of the risk conditions. The study aimed to identify and describe the synthetic indices of vulnerability proceededan integrative literature review. The databases of BioMed, Bireme, PubMed, Reldalyc, SciELO and Web of Science were assessed searching for open access articles indexed by controlled descriptorsin English and Portuguese languagesfor all timeslots available. A total of selection 47 studies were analyzed and 23 synthetic indices of vulnerability identified. Results showed that the synthetic indices of vulnerability adopted four thematic approaches: social determinants of health; environmental and climatic conditions; family and course of life; territories and specific geographic areas. The evaluation of the components of the indices and indicators, as well as the methodologies adopted for the construction of synthetic indices need to consider the advantages and limitations in portraying the vulnerability through summary measures in policy formulation and decision making aimed at human development.
