Abstract:

The tooth loss is very prevalent in Brazil, especially among the elderly, where more than three million need bimaxillary dentures. To change this situation, the federal government instituted the Specialized Dental Care Centers (SDCC). Thus, this study intended to evaluate one assignment of these Centers, the provision of full conventional dentures (FCD) from the perspective of normative quality and satisfaction related to this product. To this end, it was conduced a cross-sectional study with 149 individuals rehabilitated in SDCC of Rio Grande do Norte with such dentures between 2007 and 2009. Data were obtained by questionnaire and FCD´s clinical examination about its retention, stability, aesthetics, and fixation. From the 233 evaluated dentures, 52.7% of upper FCD and 9.5% of lower FCD were technically satisfactory. However, 69.1% (n = 103) of respondents reported satisfaction with their dentures. Concerning the association between normative quality and satisfaction, the chi-square test indicated that upper FCD technically adequate (p = 0.041), particularly in terms of retention (p = 0.002) and stability (p = 0.000) were associated with people´s positive satisfaction. Thus, the FCD satisfied the users, although the normative failure. However, this satisfaction may come from the rehabilitating itself and not from its functionality.
