Abstract:

The objective of the study was to analyze possible associations between maternal age under 16 years, with weight and gestational age of the newborn, as well as the occurrence of cesarean delivery. It was a sectional study using data of Live Birth Certificates/DN obtained through the National System of Live Births/SINASC, Feira de Santana/Bahia/Brazil, in the period 2006-2012. In the analyzes, it was used logistic regression for odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval of 95%, measuring the strength of association between variables, adjusted for confounding factors. Newborns (NB), low birth weight and underweight showed significant association with maternal age (≤ 16 years) (OR 1.21 and 1.20, respectively), and statistical interaction of inadequate prenatal care, and cesarean delivery (OR 1.65 and 1.58, respectively); in teenage pregnancy under the age of 16 years, cesarean delivery showed a significant association with single marital status (OR 1.24), inadequate prenatal care (OR 1.58) and newborns with low weight (OR 1.34). The data suggest that multiple factors may interfere with the type of delivery and pregnancy outcome of adolescents at an early age, pointing out the importance of investments in policies and actions directed to this group, considered a high vulnerability to pregnancy and perinatal injuries.
