Abstract:

The objective was to analyze the temporal trend of hospitalizations and mortality due to colostomies in Brazil and its regions by sex and age group2012 to 2022, according to annual percentage change and average annual percentage change. In the period analyzed, Brazil had 60,291 hospitalizations for colostomies and 7,806 deaths associated with the procedure. The highest number of hospitalizations was for males (52.5%), the Southeast had the highest number of hospitalizations (29,735) and deaths (4,108), followed by the Northeast with 11.573 and 1.447 respectively. The temporal analysis showed an increase in the number of hospitalizations for males, especially in the Northeast region of 3.36% (AAPC: 3.36; 95%CI: 0.68;6.12) and for females in the North region with 6.68% (AAPC: 6.68; 95%CI: 1.48;5.92). As for the age group, there was a greater annual increase in the female population aged 60 to 69 with 3.47% (AAPC: 3.47; 95%CI: 1.58;5.39). The results showed a high rate of hospitalizations for colostomy and mortality associated with the procedure, with an increase over the period analyzed, accompanied by regional differences in terms of gender and age, which call for the emergence of public health actions aimed at the main causes of colostomy in the adult population.
