Abstract:

Liver cancer represents a global public health challenge with significant regional variation. This study aimed to analyze the mortality trend from liver cancer in Brazil, stratified by sex, age group, and macro-regions, from 2000 to 2023. It is a time series study that examined liver cancer mortality trends among men and women aged 30 years and older, in Brazil and its macro-regions, over the period from 2000 to 2023. Basic death corrections were performed, followed by the calculation of crude and age-standardized mortality rates. Trends were analyzed using the Joinpoint linear regression model. Heterogeneity was observed in liver cancer mortality trends across Brazil, with increasing trends in the Northeast, South, and Southeast macro-regions, particularly among men and individuals aged 50 years and older, and a stable trend in the North and Central-West. Brazil overall showed a growth trend with a slight decline beginning in 2020, which may be related to the COVID-19 pandemic, due to underreporting and delays in diagnosis. There is no uniform pattern throughout the country, and the dynamics of liver cancer mortality are complex.
