Abstract:

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis that has an epidemic potential, especially after heavy rains that, in excess, cause overflows, urban floods and flash floods. Some characteristics of the coastal region of Santa Catarina, located in southern Brazil, influence these processes. Therefore, the study of leptospirosis in six municipalities in the State with the highest incidences and epidemic peaks since 2000 to 2015, the objective of this work was to show the trend of this disease and the climatic and environmental variables associated with its occurrence, adjusting two models with Negative Binomial response. The highest incidences were in 2008 and 2011, with peaks in the same month or after the events of disasters. The incidence showed a strong seasonal behavior, higher in summer months. There was a decrease trend in the incidence of the municipalities studied, estimated at 3.21% per year. The most strongly associated climatic and environmental factors were the number of rainy days, maximum temperature, presence of flash flood and presence of overflow with different impacts on different municipalities. There were significant interactions, indicating that the effect of overflow on incidence is not the same in all municipalities and the differences in incidence among municipalities depend on the occurrence or not of overflow.
