Abstract:

Resilience is the ability to adapt to adverse life situations and may be potentiated by the action of protective factors, among which stands out the social support. This study aimed to identify associations between resilience and sociodemographic variables (gender, age, income, marital status, living arrangement and religion) and correlations between resilience and social support in a sample of 86 urban older adult people. It used a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Resilience and the Social Support Scale. The mean of age was 75.7 years (SD = 5.35), with a predominance of women (72.1%; n = 62). There was a high capacity for resilience among the older adult people (M =134.37, SD = 16.6) and moderate social support score (M = 17.36, SD = 2.77). It was found association between the variables resilience and religion (2 = 0,30; p = 0,027). It was obtained a weak positive correlation between the independence and determination factor of the Resilience Scale with social support (p = 0.005). Linear regression analysis showed that social support was not a predictive variable for the resilience of this search group. The development of new tools is necessary to enable more accurate researches of the protective effects of social support on resilience in older adults.
