Abstract:

Brazil was one of the first countries in the world to ban Electronic Smoking Devices (DEFs). This prohibition was motivated by the lack of evidence regarding the alleged therapeutic properties and about safety of these products. Due this prohibition, ANVISA was criticized, especially by vapers groups. These groups argue that prohibition prevents people access a product that aid in smoking cessation and be less toxic than ordinary cigarettes. Thus, the question arises whether this decision was successful or not. Available data show that DEFs have diverse formulations and some toxic substances are released in significant levels during the use. Studies in animals and humans have shown a potential toxic effect. The studies have also shown that they can affect the health of passive smokers. As for its use as a cessation tool, studies are still inconclusive. It was observed a high degree of use among adolescents in countries whose use was authorized. In this way, Brazil, by prohibiting these products, prevented the populationconsuming an unproven product that would aid in the treatment of smoking, with indications of significant toxicity and highly attractive to the young.
