Abstract:

This study measures the workload of unpaid care work in the Brazilian population, considering the different conditions of labor market insertion. Using microdata from the 2022 Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADc), we estimate the determinants of the amount of time dedicated to care, considering the variables of sex, education, income, and age. Approximately 150 million people performed care and/or domestic work daily, with women dedicating 54% more hours per week than men in all analyzed groups in 2022. The highest workload was observed among the unemployed and those outside the labor market. The estimate of the economic value of unpaid care work reveals a substantial contribution of 10.0% to the Brazilian economy, despite not being counted in the Gross Domestic Product. The findings of this study demonstrate the persistent gender inequality in unpaid care work and the need for public policies that promote shared responsibility and the economic valuation of these activities.
