This review describes and critically analyzes the work “The Global Politics of Census Taking: Quantifying Populations, Institutional Autonomy, Innovation”, which aims to analyze the 2020 round censuses based on a transdisciplinary debate. As the population and its categories are the main denominators of public policies, the work has relevance in collective health, as censuses help in understanding states and population changes related to the pattern of health and disease. Bringing together academics and techniciansstatistics-producing institutions in the global South and North, the production is structured into 3 sections. The first deals with collective representations and the (non)use of ethnic-racial categories in censuses. The second reflects on institutional autonomy, statistical capacity, trust and political interference. And the third analyzes socio-material and methodological innovations.

Os censos em foco: transformações recentes, questões sociopolíticas e inovações metodológicas.
Abstract(resumo):
Esta resenha descreve e analisa criticamente a obra “The Global Politics of Census Taking: Quantifying Populations, Institutional Autonomy, Innovation”, que objetiva analisar os censos da rodada 2020 a partir de um debate transdisciplinar. Como a população e suas categorias são os principais denominadores de políticas públicas, a obra tem relevo na saúde coletiva, já que censos auxilam na compreensão de estados e mudanças populacionais relacionadas ao padrão de saúde e doença. Reunindo acadêmicos e técnicos de instituições produtoras de estatística no Sul e Norte global, a produção é estruturada em 3 seções. A primeira trata das representações coletivas e o (não)uso de categorias étnico-raciais nos censos. A segunda reflete sobre autonomia institucional, capacidade estatística, confiança e interferência política. E a terceira analisa inovações sócio-materiais e metodológicas.
