Abstract:

This article is the product of a historical-critical literature review that analyzes the worldwide historical milestones that during the 20th century enabled the emergence and consolidation of the medical areas of rehabilitation and their ways to reach childhood. The analyses and reflections based on the documents revised here are outlined under the framework of three theoretical tensions: 1) today’s child and tomorrow’s adult, 2) the concepts of habilitation – rehabilitation, and 3) the placement of the subject in society. Given those contexts, this paper is divided into two sections. The first section conceals the first half of the 20th century, war and post-war periods and the initiation of [re]habilitation. The second section coversthe second half of the 20th century to the present, period of political organizations and technology development. We conclude that these frameworks of [re]habilitation are confronted in this contemporary era, with an overflowing reality of the concepts of childhood that were historically introduced. The realities that children face today are diverse and complex, thus it is necessary to rethink the normalizing vision of childhood instituted during the 20th century.
