Abstract:

In Brazil, the distribution of pediatric intensive care units (PICU) admission causes, costs and assistance are still poorly understood. In order to describe the profile of hospitalizations by age group in PICU of Pernambuco SUS, in 2010, was performed a cross-sectional study with the universe of 1,915 hospitalizations in the six PICU available in Pernambuco, using the database from the Hospital Information System. Were described the distribution of variables and test the differences between age groups. Predominated admissions occurred in males (58.1%), at 1-4 years old (32.5%), in philanthropic units (64.1%), in type III PICU (59.2%) and for neoplastic causes (28.9%). Were observed average stay of 14.4 days and average cost of R $ 6,674.80. The average distance from the city of residence to the PICU ranged from 8.7 to 486.5 km. There were 207 deaths (10.8 / 100 admissions), 30% because of infectious diseases. Were evidenced differences between age groups (p <0.05), except for the sex. In conclusion, in Pernambuco, hospitalizations in PICU differ in geographic access and the sociodemographic characteristics, admission and causes of hospitalization and death among age groups.
