Abstract:

Introduction: The concept of episode of care emerged on health services research during the 1960’s. Researchers have described the episodes from three different perspectives: the patient (episode illness), the provider (episode of disease), and the payer (episode of care). Objective: The main goal of this literature review is to present the review of the episode of care methodology in health public. Methods: A MEDLINE search of English language literature was performed to identify studies published between 1950 and 2007 that defined the episode of care. Results: A total of 54 articles met the criteria for evaluation. Conclusion: The definition of episode of care differs greatly in the published literature. The appropriateness and choice of the episode of care measure employed should be determined by the overall goals of the study, as well as the relative advantages and limitations of the measures.
