Abstract:

The Food Guide for the Brazilian Population (GAPB) is an official document that addresses principles and recommendation for an adequate diet, and it is configured as a support tool for food and nutrition education actions. Objective: To analyze the content of the guide, which is one of the main devices of public policies related to food in Brazil, through the concepts of social theory, especially theories of modernity, identity and risks. Results: In the detailed analysis of the guide content, it was found that it considered Brazilian regions cultural and biological food diversity. It is based on food not on nutrients, making illustrative recommendations easy to public understanding. It was concerned with avoiding food risks, taking into consideration the issue of acquiring adequate and healthy food. However, two risks were not addressed: 1) the problem of processed and ultra-processed foods (PU); and 2) the omission of warnings about transgenic foods (GMOs). Conclusions: Although, the guide has been built in an innovative way, stimulating time, attention and companionship at the table, the GAPB needs a revision to incorporate aspects related to Food Risks.
