Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to conceive a critical analysis of the first item of the Rio +20 agenda: "A green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication", from a specific perspective of the collective health. Methodologically, the analysis was performed through two converging pathways: (a) argumentative - through a dialectical analysis of facts and reports produced during the process, and (b) pragmatic – an analysis of the socio-environmental profile of the current twenty largest economies in the world, using indicators present in international agencies’ databases. Our results suggest that the major environmental pressure onto natural resources is not poverty, as understood by the dominant agenda, but the models of production historically determined.
