Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present comparative data on drinking and driving behavior related to drivers in Belo Horizonte – MG, in the period from 2005 to 2009, evaluating the impact of the Law nº 11.705 (Dry Law), dated June 6th, 2008. Prevalence data about this behavior, collected at “Sobriety Checkpoints” (methodology internationally used), were analyzed using representative samples obtained from drivers in different public roads of intensive traffic in Belo Horizonte (2005-2009), thus allowing the analysis of the impact caused by the new law. In 2008, the data showed a reduction of about 50% in the prevalence of individuals driving with any blood alcohol level, when compared to 2007, coinciding with the change in legislation. This study showed that the impact caused by the Law nº 11.705 was very expressive in the sense of modifying the studied behavior. However, other control measures need to be added to the current legislation, in order to obtain a continuous reduction of drinking and driving behavior, thereby fostering a culture of sobriety in traffic.
