Abstract:

The undergraduate courses in Public Health are now a reality in Brazil. The main goal of this article is to present these courses coordinators’ views on the process of their creation and implementation, emphasizing the context in which it happened and its progression. Ten actors, which worked in eight different institutions, were interviewed, and those interviews were submitted to the analysis of content proposed by Bardin. The results showed that the creation of such courses derives from a long process of discussion in the field, and was sped up by some important decisions of the Brazilian education management, such as the Program of Support to Federal Universities’ Restructuring and Expansion Plans. The coordinators’ testimonies allowed the researchers to understand the contexts prior to the proposal and the way it was developed by each university individually, making it possible to precise not only the common aspects to each institution, but also their specificities. Nowadays, these courses have the purpose of forming professionals focused on the management of health services, especially the ones which integrate the Unified Health System (SUS), being an irreversible advance in the field of Public Health.
