The early detection of this cancer in early stage through mammography is the effective way to reduce the diseases and mortality rates. This study had the purpose to verify knowledge about breast cancer and mammography between aged women; to identify if they make this exam and to point the reasons that them carry out or no the early detection exam. The exploration and cross-sectional study with 98 older women, of three Daycare Center for the third age located in East of the city of São Paulo. On the knowledge about mammography as exam used in the early detection of the breast cancer, 55% of the women had answered that they knew, but 38,8% hadn’t got to express the correct name of the exam. The great majority of these women (77,6%) had carried out the exam and 22.4% had never made. We verify that the knowledge on the symptoms and the exams used in the early detection of the breast cancer influenced the carry out of mammography. The reasons more pointed to make the mammography were: concern with the health (53,8%) and medical recommendation (38,5%). The reasons didn’t make the exam were: didn’t have medical recommendation (50%), never will have the illness (23,1%), it didn’t feel symptoms (19,2%) and fear (7,7%). This study showed to the subject "breast cancer" well is known by the women, however the mammography still needs to be clarified how much to its objectives and recommendations. The fact of aged women who had never carried out the exam, points the continuous necessity to do educative actions on the breast cancer and its early detection exam.Key-words: breast cancer; older women; early detection; mammography.
