Abstract:

The purpose of this study was identify if the functional dentition (FD) lack is associated with the commitment of oral functions/daily activities between adults. For this, we used datathe national survey of oral health (called SB Brasil 2010). FD was evaluated by the criterion proposed by the World Health Organization (at least 20 teeth in the mouth). The Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) questionnaire was used to evaluate daily activities/oral functions. Descriptive analysis, bivariate (Chi square) and multiple (logistic regression) were realized, being the estimated odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (OR/CI95%). 9564 adults were included and evaluated. 2200 adults (20.5%) were considered with FD lack. 55.0% of adults had an impact on at least one of the daily activities/oral functions evaluated. The lack of FD between adults was associated (p≤0.05) with the impact in speech (1.88/1.33-2.64) and ashamed to smile or talk (1.35/1.00-1.83). A considerable prevalence of lack of FD was identified, this absence was associated with the commitment of the daily activities/oral functions (speech and ashamed to smile and talk). Dental rehabilitation of patients with FD lack should consider the return of these oral functions lost (speech and ashamed to smile or talk).
