Abstract:

For decades, the practices and concepts of health sciences and psychology associated lesbian sexuality with pathology. During the 20th century that position changed gradually. This article analyses such changes while reflecting theoretically on the domain of lesbian health, dominated by heteronormative and heterosexist conceptions and practices, in research and in health care. Through a critical contextualization of the literature we identify specific health needs of lesbians, while questioning the interventions of professionals and health care services. Specific and concrete actions are proposed in the fields of health promotion and in the eradication of discrimination and inequality in health care.
