ABSTRACT
This study aimed to bring a discussion about the meanings of garbage from the vision of a group of garis and garbage pickers residents in Fortaleza/CE. Using a qualitative methodology, under the technique of individual interview, this work brings results constructed in a search that is being developed with the employees of the collection of household garbage in Fortaleza/CE and those working in a plant for sorting recyclable materials. Throughout the period of rapprochement with the "world of garbage" were conducted eight interviews. After transcription and interpretation of testimony noticed that the trash is seen by respondents as something dangerous to health (caused by various diseases) and also as a means of survival (as a result of non-inclusion in the labour market due to lack of study and/or opportunity).
