Abstract:

The goal of the present sutdy is to rewiew in the scientific literature the role of mothers, fathers and relatives on the obesity treatment of the children. Sources: We searched for original articles in BIREME(BVS) e PUBMED(MEDLINE) and Scielo plataforms from 2004 to 2010, with the key words "the role of parents" and " childhood obesity ", "the role of parents" and "child obesity treatment", "the mothers‘ role" and "childhood obesity "; "the mothers role" and "child obesity treatment". Summary of the findings: Twenty papers were selected and divided in two categories discussing according to the goal of this review. We found implications of parents and relatives on the children obesity, more specifically related to the mother’s role. Conclusions: The role of parents and relatives is fundamental in promoting healthy behaviours and lifestyles. The distorted maternal perception leads to the overweight be perceived as normal. This fact can leads to difficulties in the treatment of children obesity. On the other hand the admitting that the children are overweight probably promotes a better acceptance of treatment. Furthermore, it could be the necessary requirement for the searching of professional aid.
