Abstract:

This is a qualitative approach research that aimed to analyze the perceptions both of the health team and of the users of the Pediatric Unit of the University Hospital at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina regarding the dentists’ participation in the health care of hospitalized children. Data were collected through interviews based on a form consisting of semi-structured questions and analyzed by the content analysis technique and trough the process of analyzing, considering and summarizing. Eight professionals from the health team, as well as seven carers and five hospitalized children took part in the interviews. The dental care provided to these children was developed by students in the Undergraduate and Graduate Program in Dentistry, via an extension project of an educational preventive project. Results show wide acceptance and importance of dentists’ participation in the context of the Unit as staff members who implement the concept of integral health, and as support professionals for the health team in the care, streamlining and optimizing of interdisciplinary work. Participants perceive as very important and even essential the effective participation of the dentists in the health care of hospitalized children.
