Abstract:

Objective to assess whether different degrees of dental fluorosis are associated to the presence of dental trauma among schoolchildren. This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 12 school years. The examinations were performed by 24 dentists trained and calibrated. Data collection occurred in 36 public schools drawn between the 89 public schools of the city. Adopted as a diagnostic criterion for dental fluorosis index of Dean and for dental trauma was found clinical signs of fractures and dental avulsion. Descriptive analyses were conducted, bivariate and multiple. Among the school 2755 included in this study, 1089 (39.6%) were diagnosed with dental fluorosis and 106 (3.8%) had a tooth or more with trauma. Identified increased prevalence of dental fluorosis, regardless of degree of severity among individuals with a tooth or more with dental trauma. This association was stronger with more severe degrees of fluorosis. In addition, it was found that the presence of fluorosis was greater among those with self perception of the presence of tooth stains and who received dental care in school. Therefore, the dental fluorosis was associated with the presence of dental trauma, regardless of severity of fluorosis, with more severe degrees of fluorosis had a stronger association.
