Abstract:

The aim of this study was to analyze the legal rules that have oriented the conformation of organizational structures in the sports field, directed to people with disabilities in Brazil. For this purpose, the theoretical and methodological referential of the New Cultural History was privileged, based on the analysis of legal documents, as well as oral sources, which consist of three interviews with athletes who have experienced the period before the creation of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. These sources were subjected to the technique of documental analysis. The study has shown that the process of sport institutionalization for people with disabilities in Brazil was marked by a slow pace of consolidation, which has directly influenced the actions of sports entities and the athletes’ endeavor in competitions. With the creation of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee in 2005, the actions were centralized and a new conformation was established in a national range. Since the second half of the 1990s, the Brazilian Paralympic sport has shown significative advances and scores at the Paralympic Games. Through this version of history it is expected to contribute to other studies and also to preserve the sport memory of the country that is going to host the Paralympic Games in 2016.
