Abstract:

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is a risk factor for morbidity, infant and child mortality. In Brazil the highest percentages of low birth weight occurs in regions of better socio-economic status. Objective: to know the spatial distribution of low birth weight rates and it’s correlation with social indicators and service. Drawing: ecological, taking Brazilian states as units of analysis. Methodology used the spatial analysis technique, 2009 data from SINASC, IPEA and IBGE. Results: higher rates of low birth weight are in the south / southeast states, Global Moran: 0.267, p = 0.02. Clusters of high-high type in the Southeast and low-low states of the Amazon region. Conclusion: The spatial inequality of low birth weight reflects the socioeconomic conditions of the states. More developed regions hold higher rates of low birth weight, therefore, the presence of the service and its use do decrease infant mortality and increase the BPN.
