Abstract:

Brazilian journalistic media produced a yellow fever media epidemic in the summer of 2007/2008. Focusing on an alarmist approach, the journalistic coverage strained the senses of the disease until the notion of an out-of-control epidemic settled in daily life. This article presents the results of a qualitative research whose objective was to investigate the journalists\' perspective on the media epidemic. Semi-directed interviews were conducted with four journalists who participated in the coverage of the event (one publisher and three reporters) who worked in two daily newspapers of national circulation. It was possible to conclude that the media epidemic was the result of the socio-organizational forces, the ideologies that modulate the newsmaking and the communication actions of the public sector.
