Abstract:

This study analyzed the therapeutic itineraries related to the oral health of quilombola adults in a rural district of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia. This is a qualitative study in which ten semi-structured interviews were performed with adult members of the quilombola community, in May 2021. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed through content analysis. The results showed a lack of, or poor oral hygiene at some stage of life, especially in childhood and adolescence, the use of popular practices for oral health care, and professional care experiences marked by tooth extraction. The use of health services was primarily reported only in the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. The responses varied regarding the perception of ease of access to health services in the community. Regarding satisfaction with oral health, a common complaint was the need to use or replace dental prostheses. This work concludes that oral health must be promoted in conjunction with actions to promote disease prevention, dental rehabilitation, and a greater appreciation of the knowledge and worldview of the quilombola population.
