Saúde e TrabalhoAbstract:
OBJECTIVE: Describe the work of sugarcane manual harvesters, assessing the nutritional behavior and body composition from beginning to end of the harvest.METHOD: A descriptive longitudinal study was carried out on harvesters in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, who answered a socio-demographic questionnaire and allowed the measurement of Body Mass Index, Body Fat Percentage and Arm Muscle Circumference in three stages. Creatine kinase was measured at the end of the harvest in skeletal isoform, C-reactive protein and plasma urea.
RESULTS: During nine months, 30 male harvesters, migrants from the Northeast (Ceará), were assessed. The ages ranged from 18 to 44. The workers had significant body fat and weight loss in the first half of the harvest. Most gained lean body mass, except for those in the activity for a prolonged period of time, who gained less. Eighteen workers had abnormal values of creatine kinase and four, out of 24 who had donated blood, had their urea altered.
CONCLUSION: Working with sugarcane harvest causes weight and body fat losses and gains in lean body mass index, which wears out throughout the history of working in consecutive years. It can cause changes in biochemical markers of chronic systemic inflammation. Further studies would help to understand the relationship among stress, exhaustion, employment longevity and health for this kind of work.
