Abstract:

This article studies the therapeutic impact for mental health of valuing, transmitting, and practicing traditional knowledge and skills within "quilombolas" communities of traditional fishermen from “Baia de Todos os Santos” (Brazil). The study is based upon four investigations of psychodynamic of work, two were conducted with “quilombola” fisherwomen from Santo Amaro and Maragogipe. and the other two with two groups of “Agentes Comunitários de Saúde” (Community Health Workers), who also work in these cities. This research took place between 2021 and 2023. These studies have shown that, for these members of “quilombola” communities, the possibility of implementing traditional knowledge and earning a living from it, would contribute to the preservation and formation of their identity and, thus, their mental health. This suggests that, at least whithin these territories, the improvement of preventive actions towards mental health consists of valorization and transmission of these traditional knowledge and practices through projects, which has been experienced in some territories in this region.
