Abstract:

Few Brazilian articles discuss the importance of the pharmacy technicians in direct assistance to the patient. This work describes an experience of pharmacy technicians training in drug dispensing. It consists on a descriptive, cross-sectional study, conducted in primary health care. The technicians were trained by the pharmacist to advise patients in the dispensing moment and to screen cases that needed pharmaceutical consultation. The identification of problems was made through prescription checking, patient return date or direct questioning to patients. Intervention and problem identification flows were elaborated to be made by the technician. After training, pharmacy technicians identified 3,944 problems. The most common ones were: use of inferior dosage than prescribed (26%) and no adherence to pharmacological treatment. The results show the importance of technician training in drug dispensing, making them a pharmacist’s ally in the process of identifying and solving drug related problems, in addition to making them active members in the care process in the public health system.
