Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To translate and adapt the Attitudes Toward Obese Persons Scale, into the Brazilian socio-cultural context, named Escala de Atitudes em Relação às Pessoas com Obesidade (ATOP-BR). METHODS: This is a methodological study conducted in six steps: 1) translation by two independent translators; 2) synthesis of translations; 3) retrotraduction, by two native translators; 4) Specialist Committee to evaluate the equivalence between the original scale and the Portuguese version, which also contributed to ensuring that the instrument had an anti-stigmatizing language; 5) content validation had the application of the Delphi method, which was conducted by a panel of experts; 6) test of the pre-final version. RESULTS: The items of ATOPthe original version of the instrument to the Portuguese language version, ATOP-BR, reached an adequate degree of semantic, idiom, cultural, and conceptual equivalence. At the test stage of the pre-final version, the instrument was easy to understand. DISCUSSION: The ATOP-BR scale is a satisfactorily translated and adapted instrument, with potential for application in research concerning weight stigma in the Brazilian population.
