Abstract:

ABSTRACT
Objectives: To describe the distribution and temporal evolution of the main causes of mortality in the municipalities of the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, and to verify the association with socioeconomic indicators. Methods: This is a mixed ecological study. Age-standardized mortality rates were calculated for 853 municipalities of MG and 13 intermediate geographic regions, date Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study for the three-year periods 2000 to 2002 (T1), 2009 to 2011 (T2) and 2016 to 2018 (T3). Data was shown in thematic maps and heat map. Pearson\'s coefficient was used in the correlation analysis between mortality and socioeconomic variables. Results: Between T1 and T3 there was a predominance of mortality due to Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), although with a decrease of 22.4% in rates for NCDs (553.6 to 429.9 per 100,000 inhabitants) and 29% in rates for Communicable, Neonatal and Nutritional diseases (CNN) (83 to 58.9 per 100,000 inhabitants), and an increase of 3.5% for External Causes (EC) (62.2 to 64.4 per 100,000 inhabitants). Correlation coefficients were positive, strong and significant (R> 0.70; p>0.05) between socioeconomic status indicators and percentage changes in rates by the three groups of causes. Conclusion: Different patterns of mortality were found in Minas Gerais, with smaller decreases in rates in areas of worse socioeconomic status, showing health inequalities.
