Abstract:

In order to discuss and understand the oncologist’s experiences on communicating bad news to children and their relatives, a review of literature published by PubMed, Lilacs, Scielo e Scopus database was done. The available articles, evaluated through thematic analysis, show that there are few studies focusing on the professional’s perception about bad news; that communication is the tool through which psychosocial, cultural, bioethical, legal and emotional aspects are treated; that more is expected from physicians than they were trained for; professional information and training on strategies on how to handle the communication of bad news need to be continuous in order to keep up with dynamic occurrences and its consequences on doctor-patient relations in the oncologic field where patients tend to be or feel under constant life-threatening conditions.
