Abstract:

The high tuberculosis (TB) rates observed in the Brazilian prison population highlight the need for TB control measures more eficiente in this population, especially in Rio de Janeiro State where detection rates are 30 times higher than in the general population. We present results of epidemiologic, biomathemathic modelling, molecular biology, psychosocological, architectural and juridic researchs carried out in this state in order to assess the situation and develop TB control strategies adapted to specificities of the prison context. These studies contributed to the development of norms which serve as reference for the implementation and evaluation of TB control activities. The confrontation of these norms with prisons’ daily reality demonstrate the limitations met for their implementation and shows the need for a technical supervision more effective by health organs, as well as by instances em charge of monitoring sentence service in order to guarantee a incarcerated persons access to prevention and care measures in conformity with their rights to health.
